In short: The Bayraktar TB3 is a medium-altitude, long-endurance combat drone designed to launch from the decks of amphibious assault ships. With folding wings and the ability to carry heavy precision munitions, it has successfully demonstrated manned-unmanned teaming with fighter jets, marking a significant evolution in high-intensity naval warfare.

Unveiled in October 2020, the Bayraktar TB3 represents a specialized adaptation of unmanned aerial technology for maritime environments. Weighing approximately 1,200 kilograms, the drone features folding wings to facilitate storage and operations on ships like the TCG Anadolu, which Turkey has repurposed as the world's first military drone carrier. Its development focuses on short-range landing and take-off capabilities, a necessity for operating from Landing Helicopter Docks (LHD) rather than traditional, massive aircraft carriers.

The drone's operational versatility was highlighted during NATO's Steadfast Dart 2026 exercise in the Baltic region. During this mission, the TB3 performed an eight-hour joint sortie alongside German Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, covering 1,700 kilometers while navigating freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall. This demonstration proved the platform's ability to integrate into multinational maneuvers, providing reconnaissance and targeting data via its ASELFLIR 500 system while simultaneously engaging surface targets with MAM-L precision-guided munitions.

Beyond its Turkish deployment, the TB3 is gaining international interest as navies seek alternatives to traditional fixed-wing aircraft. In February 2025, Indonesia signed an agreement to acquire 60 units, potentially for use on the ship Giuseppe Garibaldi. Meanwhile, the Italian Navy plans to operate the drone from the Cavour, and Spain has entered initial discussions regarding the TB3 as a potential replacement for its retiring Harrier fleet. A joint Turkish-Italian variant, known as Astore Levante, further expands the platform's technological reach by incorporating advanced European radar and electronic warfare systems.
