How a swampy beaver habitat became the heart of Oregon's Silicon Forest
In short: Beaverton, Oregon, was once a landscape of marshes and beaver dams so vast they looked like a lake. Today, this former agricultural outpost is a major economic hub, anchoring the region's high-tech industry and serving as a critical transit center for the Portland metropolitan area.
The area now known as Beaverton was originally the home of the Atfalati, a Native American tribe whose village, Chakeipi, translates to 'place of the beaver.' Early settlers, mispronouncing the tribe's name as Tualatin, referred to the site as 'Beaverdam.' By the time settlers from Kentucky and New York arrived in the mid-19th century, the Atfalati population had dwindled significantly. Lawrence Hall established the first land claim in 1847, and by 1893, the community was officially incorporated with a population of 400.
The city's transformation from a swampy settlement to an economic powerhouse was driven by strategic infrastructure and industry. After the American Civil War, settlers laid out the town with hopes of attracting a railroad. By the 20th century, Beaverton had become an early home for automobile dealerships and even hosted a short-lived movie studio in the 1920s. Today, it is a key component of the 'Silicon Forest,' hosting major technology organizations and startups, while also serving as a transit-oriented hub connected by the MAX Light Rail system.
Beaverton's growth has not been without friction. The city famously engaged in a costly legal battle to annex major corporations like Nike, eventually leading to state legislation that prohibited such annexations without company consent. Despite these challenges, the city has continued to evolve, investing in modern infrastructure like the 75,000-square-foot Public Safety Center and the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts, which opened in 2022. With a 2020 population of 97,494, Beaverton remains a central player in Washington County's development.
