From factory floors to the halls of Congress
In short: Beth Macy spent over two decades reporting on the fractures of American life—from the opioid epidemic to the erosion of rural manufacturing. Now, the journalist who documented the country's crises is seeking to address them directly from the legislative floor.
Born in Urbana, Ohio, to a factory worker and a housepainter, Beth Macy became the first in her family to attend college. She spent 25 years as a reporter for The Roanoke Times in Virginia, where she earned a reputation for covering complex social issues including race, immigration, and teen pregnancy. Her work often focused on the human cost of systemic failures, earning her prestigious honors such as the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism and a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University in 2010.
Macy gained national prominence with her non-fiction books, most notably 'Dopesick' (2018). The book exposed the deadly role of the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma in the American opioid crisis. The narrative was later adapted into an eight-episode Hulu series starring Michael Keaton, for which Macy served as an executive producer and co-writer. She followed this work with 'Raising Lazarus' (2022), which shifted focus toward grassroots activism and scientifically valid treatment methods for addiction.
Her literary career also explores the economic and cultural shifts of the American landscape. In 'Factory Man' (2014), she chronicled a furniture maker's struggle against offshoring, while her latest memoir, 'Paper Girl' (2025), returns to her hometown to examine the impacts of globalization and a divided America. Macy declared her intent to run for the U.S. House of Representatives on 18 November 2025. Representing the Democratic Party, she seeks the Virginia 6th congressional district seat during the 2026 midterm elections.
Macy's trajectory represents a transition from observation to participation. By moving from reporting on the 'fractured America' to running for office, she aims to apply her decades of investigative experience to the legislative process. Her work remains centered on the intersection of local community struggles and national policy.
