In short: When Beta Ray Bill debuted in 1983, he was designed to look like a terrifying monster to trick readers into expecting a villain. Instead, he became the first being outside the Norse pantheon to prove his nobility by lifting Mjolnir, earning him his own enchanted war hammer, Stormbreaker.

Created by Walt Simonson for The Mighty Thor #337, Beta Ray Bill was conceived as an 'Everyman' for the Korbinite race. Simonson deliberately crafted a monstrous, skull-like appearance to subvert expectations, aiming for a visual blend of death and beauty. The character's origin story involves the near-extinction of the Korbinites after their galaxy exploded. To protect the survivors, Bill was physically augmented through Korbinite science, inheriting the attributes of a wild beast—a process that had proven fatal to all his predecessors.

The character's initial conflict with Thor arose when the sentient ship Skuttlebutt, which guarded the Korbinite fleet, perceived the Asgardian as a threat. During their battle, a mystical enchantment caused Thor to revert to his mortal persona, Donald Blake, after being separated from Mjolnir for 60 seconds. Bill defeated the mortal Blake and, upon striking his cane, transformed it into Mjolnir. This act of worthiness prompted Odin to organize a duel to the death in the realm of Skartheim. Though Bill emerged victorious, his decision to save Thor from falling into lava demonstrated a nobility that convinced Odin to commission the creation of Stormbreaker.

Beyond his role as a warrior, Bill's identity is deeply tied to his struggle to protect his people from threats like the fire demon Surtur and the cosmic entity Galactus. His narrative has evolved through various miniseries, including a 2021 run by Daniel Warren Johnson. While he was nearly included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thor: Ragnarok, producer Kevin Feige ultimately cut the character, stating that a brief appearance would not do him justice. Today, Bill remains a staple of Marvel lore, often serving as a staunch ally to Thor and a defender of the universe.
