Beyond the headlines: The professional life and family history of Doria Ragland
In short: Often framed by tabloid narratives, Doria Ragland is a social worker, entrepreneur, and yoga instructor whose life spans from a childhood in Los Angeles to the global stage. Her personal history, rooted in the American South, reveals a complex lineage that stretches back to the era of slavery in North Carolina.
Born in Cleveland in 1956 to a nurse and an antiques dealer, Ragland moved to Los Angeles as an infant. Her family history is deeply American; records indicate her ancestors were enslaved in Chatham County, North Carolina, in the late 18th century. Her great-grandfather, Stephen Ragland, lived through the abolition of slavery in 1865, while her maternal grandparents worked in the service industry at a Cleveland hotel. This lineage reflects a broader history of resilience and adaptation across generations.
Ragland’s own career path has been remarkably varied. After working as a makeup artist on the set of General Hospital, where she met her former husband Thomas Markle Sr., she transitioned into travel agency work and small business ownership. Later in life, she pursued formal education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and, in 2011, a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California. She subsequently spent three years providing mental health support at a clinic in Culver City.
In recent years, Ragland has balanced her professional pursuits with her role in the public eye. She has served as an executive for a Beverly Hills-based senior care firm and has taught jewelry making. Since the 2018 wedding of her daughter, Meghan, to Prince Harry, she has navigated the scrutiny of international media while maintaining her residence in View Park–Windsor Hills. She remains a central figure in her family, having welcomed her grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, into the world in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
