How a regional athletic conference became a pioneer in collegiate women's flag football
In short: Founded in 1983, the Big South Conference has spent decades navigating the volatile landscape of collegiate athletics. From its roots in the South Atlantic to recent innovations in streaming and new sports, the league has constantly adapted its membership and structure to remain relevant in the evolving NCAA Division I environment.
Established in 1983, the Big South Conference initially brought together institutions across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Over the following decades, the conference underwent significant membership shifts, expanding through the 1990s and later adapting to the complexities of Division I athletics. The league's evolution is marked by its strategic responses to the changing needs of its members, including the addition of football sponsorship in 2002 and various partnerships with other conferences to stabilize its competitive offerings.
The conference has frequently navigated the departure and arrival of schools as they sought different competitive homes. For instance, Coastal Carolina University, a charter member, left in 2016 after winning the College World Series—the first NCAA championship in any sport for the Big South. Other schools, such as Liberty University and North Carolina A&T State University, have moved through the conference as their own athletic ambitions shifted toward FBS-level football or other conference affiliations. These transitions often required the Big South to rethink its internal structure, such as when it combined its football operations with the Ohio Valley Conference in 2023.
Innovation remains a core component of the Big South's modern identity. In 2009, the conference launched the Big South Network, a collective production effort that eventually moved all its livestreamed events to ESPN+ by the 2018–19 season. More recently, the conference made headlines in March 2026 by announcing it would sponsor women's flag football starting in the 2028 season. While the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference will technically hold the first championship in 2027, the Big South's commitment—backed by five full members—signals a significant shift in how smaller conferences are positioning themselves within the broader landscape of collegiate sports.
