In short: Born from a 1989 meeting in South Carolina, the Peach Belt Conference has grown from a modest group of seven institutions into a competitive NCAA Division II force. Over decades, it has navigated mergers, institutional departures, and the constant shifting landscape of collegiate sports to maintain its regional identity.

The Peach Belt Conference traces its origins to November 1988, when 11 schools gathered in Greenville, South Carolina, to discuss forming a new athletic league. By December 1989, seven of those institutions formally established the Peach Belt Athletic Conference, with competition officially beginning in the 1990–91 academic year. The original charter members included institutions such as Armstrong State College, Columbus College, and Lander College. The league operated under this name until May 2000, when it was officially shortened to the Peach Belt Conference.

The conference has experienced significant structural changes over its history. It reached a peak of 14 member institutions during the 2012–13 season. Throughout its existence, the league has managed complex transitions, including the 2013 merger of Augusta State University and North Georgia College & State University into larger university systems, with the new entities inheriting the existing conference memberships. While some schools have departed for Division I ranks or other conferences, the league has consistently adapted by inviting new members, such as the upcoming addition of Middle Georgia State University in 2025.

Beyond its administrative history, the conference has established a strong record of athletic success. Since its inception, the league has produced 30 national champions and 27 national finalists across its sanctioned sports. Early success was defined by dynasties, such as the Lander men's tennis team, which secured eight consecutive national titles starting in 1993. The league continues to evolve its offerings, recently expanding into sports like men's lacrosse and indoor track and field to meet the changing interests of its member institutions.
