In short: He was once hailed as a ruthless virtuoso of 1990s alternative rock. Yet, beyond the multi-platinum albums and heavy metal influences, Billy Corgan built a second, unexpected career as a leader in the world of professional wrestling.

Billy Corgan’s ascent to rock stardom began in Chicago in 1988. As the primary songwriter and only constant member of the Smashing Pumpkins, he helped define the alternative rock genre. The band achieved massive commercial success throughout the 1 and 990s, with the 1993 album Siamese Dream becoming a multi-platinum hit and the 1995 double album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, earning ten-times platinum certification in the United States.

However, Corgan's musical journey was marked by intense internal friction and personal upheaval. He was often labeled a 'control freak' by the press, a reputation bolstered by his admission that he played nearly all the guitar and bass parts on Siamese Dream. The band faced significant instability, including the departure of bassist D'arcy Wretzky and the firing of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin following a drug-related tragedy in 1996 involving touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin.

Parallel to his musical evolution, Corgan pursued a distinct path in professional wrestling. In 2011, he founded the Chicago-based promotion Resistance Pro Wrestling. His involvement in the industry deepened when he joined TNA Wrestling as president in 2016, though his tenure was brief. By 2017, Corgan had purchased the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), making professional wrestling his primary professional focus.

Despite the shifts between genres and industries, Corgan's output remains prolific. From solo albums like 2005's TheFutureEmbrace to his poetry collection Blinking with Fists, he has navigated a career defined by both massive mainstream hits and experimental, often divisive, artistic ventures.
