How a British Romani boxer became the first of his community to reach the Olympics.
In short: Billy Joe Saunders rose from a Traveller site in Hertfordshire to world championship glory. His journey from a standout amateur career to holding major titles in two weight classes was defined by grit, tactical precision, and a series of high-profile rivalries that captured the attention of the global boxing world.
Born in 1989, Saunders grew up in a Romanichal and Traveller community near Hatfield. His lineage includes his great-grandfather, Absolom Beeney, a notable bare-knuckle fighter. Saunders began his path in boxing at clubs in Cheshunt and Hoddesdon, eventually achieving early success as an amateur. In 2008, he secured a gold medal at the European Union Championships and qualified for the Beijing Olympics, becoming the first British Romanichal to compete at the Games.
Transitioning to the professional ranks in 2009, Saunders quickly built a reputation for his technical ability and sharp jab. His career trajectory was marked by significant domestic clashes, including a 2014 victory over Chris Eubank Jr. that earned him the Lonsdale Belt. By 2015, he reached the pinnacle of the middleweight division by defeating Andy Lee to claim his first world title. He later expanded his success by capturing the WBO super-middleweight title in 2019, cementing his status as a multi-weight world champion.
Despite his achievements, Saunders faced numerous hurdles, including injuries, cancelled bouts, and a controversial positive drug test in 2018 for oxilofrine, which led to the loss of a major fight and his decision to vacate his middleweight title. Throughout his career, he worked with several high-profile trainers, including Jimmy Tibbs, Adam Booth, and Ben Davison, constantly adjusting his camp to maintain his competitive edge. His professional journey remains a complex narrative of immense talent, tactical discipline, and the volatile nature of elite-level boxing.
