How a radio host once held the trademark for Make America Great Again apparel
In short: Bobby Bones is a nationally syndicated radio personality who built his career escaping poverty through the airwaves. In 2015, he made headlines by securing the trademark rights for the phrase Make America Great Again on apparel, eventually trading those rights for a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1980, Bobby Estell—professionally known as Bobby Bones—began his radio journey at age 17. After graduating from Henderson State University in 2002, he eventually moved his morning show from Austin to Nashville in 2012. Today, his program reaches an estimated 9.2 million listeners weekly across more than 150 stations. Unlike traditional radio hosts, Bones lacks a classic, booming voice and famously avoids the label of DJ, despite his massive influence in the country music industry.
Bones's career is marked by unconventional maneuvers. While Donald Trump had registered the slogan for political action committee services, the trademark for merchandise like hats, t-shirts, and duffel bags remained unclaimed. Bones secured these rights and subsequently offered to return them to Trump in exchange for a $100,000 donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The deal was completed later that year.
Beyond radio, Bones has cultivated a diverse media portfolio, including television hosting, podcasting, and writing. He became the youngest inductee into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2017 and has appeared on shows ranging from American Idol to Running Wild with Bear Grylls. His career has not been without controversy; in 2014, he accidentally triggered the Emergency Alert System during an on-air rant, leading to a $1 million fine for his employer, iHeartMedia. Despite such incidents, he remains a fixture in American entertainment, having received an honorary doctorate from the University of Arkansas in 2022.
