How a struggling actor transformed into a celebrated gangster for a breakout role
In short: Before winning a National Film Award, Bobby Simha worked in marketing and outsourcing to survive. His path to stardom involved intense preparation, including tanning in the midday sun and studying real-life criminals. This dedication turned a supporting role in Jigarthanda into a career-defining performance that remains critically acclaimed today.
Born Jayasimha in 1983, the actor now known as Bobby Simha faced a difficult start in the film industry. After being conned by a fake television serial offer in Chennai, he was forced to take jobs in insurance and business process outsourcing to support himself. His break finally came through connections with short-film makers like Karthik Subbaraj, leading to early appearances in projects like Pizza and Soodhu Kavvum.
The turning point arrived with the 2014 film Jigarthanda. Simha played Assault Sethu, an aging Madurai gangster, with such intensity that he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. To embody the character, he went to extreme lengths, including standing in the sun at noon to tan his skin and interacting with actual gangsters to master their behavioral nuances. Critics praised the performance as chilling, menacing, and hilarious, with some outlets noting the film achieved cult status shortly after release.
Following this success, Simha transitioned into various roles, ranging from lead parts in action films to more nuanced characters in dramas like Bangalore Naatkal. Despite some commercial setbacks, he has maintained a steady presence in the industry, appearing in major projects like Petta, Mahaan, and the 2024 film Indian 2. In 2019, Film Companion recognized his work in Jigarthanda as one of the 100 greatest performances of the decade, cementing his reputation as a versatile actor capable of both villainous and heroic portrayals.
