From Ghetto President to national opposition leader, the transformative journey of Bobi Wine
In short: Born in a Kampala slum, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known as Bobi Wine, evolved from a popular musician into a formidable political challenger to Uganda's long-standing government. His career, marked by both artistic success and repeated state crackdowns, highlights the volatile intersection of celebrity, social activism, and national political power.
Born in 1982 to a midwife mother in a family of 34, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu grew up in the Kamwokya slum of Kampala. He rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a musician, adopting the stage name Bobi Wine. His music, spanning genres like reggae and afrobeat, often carried socially conscious messages addressing issues such as maternal health, hygiene, and domestic violence. This focus on the struggles of underprivileged communities earned him the nickname Ghetto President long before he entered formal politics.
Wine's transition to activism intensified around 2016, when he publicly critiqued the government's handling of public health after the breakdown of a radiotherapy machine. By 2017, he had won a parliamentary seat in a by-election, defeating seasoned candidates. He soon popularized the People Power Our Power slogan, which became a central force in the opposition against President Yoweri Museveni. His political rise has been met with frequent arrests, charges ranging from treason to disobedience of statutory duty, and allegations of state-sponsored violence against him and his supporters.
The 2021 and 2026 presidential elections served as flashpoints for this ongoing tension. Following the 2021 election, in which official results declared Museveni the winner, Wine alleged widespread fraud and faced house arrest. The 2026 election cycle saw further volatility, including reports of military raids on his compound and the eventual flight of Wine from Uganda in March 2026. Despite these challenges, Wine maintains his commitment to what he describes as an unfinished mission to end political repression in the country.
