The fragile world of Bubblegum Crisis: a metaphor for a bursting society
In short: Set in a reconstructed Megatokyo, this 1987 cyberpunk series explores a city built on the ruins of a massive earthquake. The title itself is a metaphor: a world in crisis, much like a chewing-gum bubble on the verge of bursting.
Produced by Youmex and animated by AIC and Artmic, the original video animation (OVA) series takes place in the year 2032. The setting is seven years after the Second Great Kantō earthquake, which split Tokyo both geographically and culturally. In this futuristic landscape, the megacorporation Genom exerts immense global influence, mass-producing bio-organic androids known as Boomers—or cyberoids—for defense and labor. However, these synthetic beings can malfunction and become deadly instruments of chaos.
The narrative follows the Knight Sabers, an all-female quartet of mercenaries equipped with advanced powered suits, as they combat these rogue Boomers. Although frequently hailed as a premier cyberpunk anime, misconceptions about its making continue to persist. Since the mid-2000s, many have incorrectly believed the series was intended to be 13 episodes but was cut to eight due to legal or financial issues. In reality, production staff, including director Katsuhito Akiyama, have clarified that there was never a long-term plan; each episode was produced as a separate work, and the process was considered fun by the creators.
The series' aesthetic and themes draw heavily from cinematic influences like Blade Runner and Streets of Fire. Its impact on the medium is evident in how it inspired other works, such as the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki series. Despite some critical notes regarding inconsistent plotting or dubbing quality, the series remains a landmark of the genre, celebrated for its peerless aesthetics and its ability to blend deep themes with bizarre, high-octane action.
