The Boston Bruins were the first NHL team based in the United States.
In short: Founded in 1924, the Boston Bruins hold a unique place in hockey history as the oldest active NHL franchise in the United States. From their humble beginnings as a grocery magnate's experiment to becoming a cornerstone of the Original Six, the Bruins have defined professional ice hockey for a century.
The Bruins were born from the vision of sports promoter Thomas Duggan, who secured three NHL expansion franchises for the United States in 1923. He sold one to Charles Adams, a Boston grocery magnate who named the team after his store's colors, brown and yellow. The team played its inaugural game on December 1, 1924, at the Boston Arena, marking the first NHL game ever held on American soil. Despite a rocky start that saw them finish in last place during their debut season, the team quickly evolved into a powerhouse.
The franchise's identity was forged through legendary figures and intense rivalries. In 1927, general manager Art Ross acquired defenseman Eddie Shore, who became the team's first true superstar. By 1929, the Bruins secured their first Stanley Cup. The team's legacy is perhaps most defined by the 'Big Bad Bruins' era, which began in the late 1960s following the arrival of defenseman Bobby Orr. Orr remains the only player in NHL history to win the Norris, Art Ross, Conn Smythe, and Hart Memorial trophies in a single season, a feat he accomplished in 1970.
The Bruins' history is also marked by significant cultural milestones and long-standing traditions. In 1958, Willie O'Ree became the first black player in NHL history when he debuted for the team. The club also maintained a record-setting 29-season playoff streak starting in 1968. Throughout their tenure, the Bruins have navigated shifting ownership, from the Adams family to the Storer Broadcasting era and eventually to Jeremy Jacobs. Despite various challenges, including the 1995 move from the historic Boston Garden to the TD Garden, the Bruins remain a central pillar of the NHL's Atlantic Division.
