How a bidding experiment transformed into a global travel empire
In short: In 1996, a single website launched with a radical idea: let customers name their own price. Today, that same lineage powers a massive network of platforms that manage over a billion hotel stays annually, quietly dominating the way the world moves.
The story of Booking Holdings began in Stamford, Connecticut, where Jay S. Walker established Priceline.com Incorporated in 1996. The platform initially operated on a unique bidding model, allowing users to propose their own prices for travel services. This strategy proved so impactful that when the company went public on March 31, 1999, Walker’s 35% stake transformed him into a multi-billionaire.
While the company's reach eventually expanded to 200 countries and 40 languages, its early years were marked by ambitious but unsuccessful diversifications. Around 2000, the firm attempted to move beyond travel by offering services like gasoline, groceries, and even home mortgages, though these ventures were ultimately abandoned. The company's true path to dominance lay in strategic acquisitions, such as the 2005 purchase of Booking.com for $133 million and the integration of ActiveHotels.com.
The corporate identity has shifted alongside its growth. Originally known as Priceline.com Incorporated, the firm rebranded to The Priceline Group Inc. in 2014, before finally adopting the name Booking Holdings in February 2018. This evolution reflects a transition from a single-site innovator to a massive aggregator of brands including Kayak, Agoda, and OpenTable.
The scale of the operation today is immense. By the end of 2023, the platforms under the Booking Holdings umbrella facilitated more than 1.2 billion room nights for travelers. The company's revenue, primarily driven by commissions, has earned it a spot at number 243 on the Fortune 500, marking it as one of the largest corporations in the United States.
