How a joke in a Chris Rock film became a multimillion-dollar horror comedy
In short: In 2014, Chris Rock mentioned a fictitious Madea Halloween movie in his film Top Five. Fast forward to 2016, and that joke became a massive box office reality, grossing $74.8 million and proving the enduring, if polarizing, power of the Madea franchise.
Released by Lionsgate on October 21, 2016, Boo! A Madea Halloween marked the eighth entry in the Madea series. It was only the second film in the franchise not adapted from a stage play, following Madea's Witness Protection. The plot follows Madea as she is recruited by her nephew, Brian, to supervise his daughter, Tiffany, amid the chaos of a local fraternity party.
The film's commercial performance significantly exceeded industry expectations. While analysts predicted an opening weekend gross of $15–17 million from 2,260 theaters, the film actually earned $27.6 million during its first weekend, finishing first at the box office. This debut ranked as the fourth-best for a Tyler Perry film. Despite the commercial success, critical reception was mixed; Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 19% approval rating, and Metacritic assigned it a score of 30/100, indicating generally unfavorable reviews. However, audience sentiment was much higher, with CinemaScore polling an average grade of "A".
The production utilized unique locations, with principal photography occurring between January 4 and April 8, 2016. Perry filmed on the 330 acres of Fort McPherson in Atlanta, which he purchased in 2015 to serve as the home for Tyler Perry Studios. For this production, soldiers' living quarters on the army grounds were converted into film sets.
The film's success led to a sequel, Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, which was released the following year on October 20, 2017.
