In short: In the 2000s, military demand for intermediate assault carbines surged. In response, Swiss manufacturer B&T developed the APC series: a highly modular family of weapons designed to be more cost-effective than assault carbines while offering unprecedented versatility for operators.

Announced in 2011, the Advanced Police Carbine (APC) series by B&T—formerly Brügger & Thomet—was built to leverage years of feedback from previous submachine gun models like the MP9. The platform is defined by extreme modularity; more than 50% of the parts are interchangeable across different versions. This allows the series to span from submachine guns to assault rifles and battle rifles, chambered in various calibers including 9×19mm, .40 S&W, 10mm Auto, and .45 ACP.

The engineering focuses on managing recoil and maximizing utility. The APC utilizes a straight blowback gas system, but it incorporates a proprietary hydraulic buffer system within the receiver back plate to control recoil. Users can easily customise the layout; the whole firearm, including its charging handle, is ambidextrous and adjustable for left or right-handed shooters. Even the trigger assembly is designed to be compatible with many aftermarket AR-15/M16 replacement parts.

This line underwent major development, notably with the 2019 APC9 PRO launch, featuring a non-reciprocating charging handle and an AR-15 compatible replaceable pistol grip. B&T's ability to scale the platform was demonstrated in March 2019, when they were awarded a $2.6 million U.S. Army contract for the APC9K subcompact weapon. This contract included an initial 350 subcompact weapons with options for up to 1,000 additional units, complete with accessories and spare parts.
