In short: The Brügger & Thomet MP9 is more than just a submachine gun. Born from the purchase of the Steyr TMP in 2001, this weapon underwent a precise evolution, integrating new safety mechanisms and modular rails to redefine the capabilities of a compact personal defense weapon.

The lineage of the MP9 begins with the Steyr TMP. When Brügger & Thomet acquired the design from Steyr in 2001, they did not merely replicate it; they re-engineered it for enhanced utility and safety. Key structural changes included the introduction of a stock that folds to the right, an integrated Picatinny rail, and a more robust trigger safety mechanism.

Functionally, the MP9 is a selective-fire weapon chambered for the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge. It is built for rapid deployment, utilizing a corrosion-resistant polymer construction that allows it to be holstered like a machine pistol. To support sustained use, the weapon employs transparent polymer detachable box magazines in capacities of 15, 20, 25, and 30 rounds.

Safety is a central pillar of the design, featuring a triple-layer system: a drop safety, a trigger safety, and an ambidextrous manual safety/fire mode selector. Later iterations, such as the NATO-compliant MP9-N, transitioned from the original Steyr-style cross-bolt push button selectors to a more modern 'HK' style selector system.

The platform's modularity extends to its caliber and configuration. In 2010, a version was developed for the 6.5×2 .25mm CBJ cartridge, which required only a barrel change. For the civilian market, the semi-automatic TP9 variant was developed, featuring a MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail positioned in front of the trigger guard to comply with United States import laws.
