In short: When NATO issued new requirements in 1989, the era of standard pistol-caliber submachine guns faced a crisis. As soft body armor became more effective, traditional rounds like 9mm Parabellum struggled to penetrate. The solution was a radical new engineering feat: a weapon designed specifically to pierce Kevlar while remaining compact.

Developed by German manufacturer Heckler & Koch, the MP7 was engineered to meet a specific tactical need: defeating Kevlar body armor. To achieve this, engineers moved away from traditional blowback systems used in submachine guns, instead implementing a short-stroke piston gas system, similar to the G36 and HK416. This mechanism works in tandem with the exclusive 4.6×30mm cartridge, which features a hardened steel penetrator rather than the softer lead or copper found in conventional ammunition.

The ballistic performance of the MP7 is centered on high-velocity precision. The standard DM11 armor-piercing round, weighing 2.0 grams, achieves a muzzle velocity of 720 m/s. This allows it to penetrate the NATO CRISAT target—consisting of 20 layers of Kevlar with a 1.6 mm titanium backing—at a distance of 200 meters. While the ammunition offers low recoil, its high rate of fire, approximately 950 rounds per minute, provides a significant density of fire.

The weapon's evolution reflects changing combat requirements. First shown as a prototype in 1999, it entered production in 2001. Subsequent iterations, such as the MP7A1 and MP7A2, introduced features like redesigned grips, more compact sights, and adjustable stocks. While the MP7 successfully filled the gap between pistols and submachine guns, a companion project, the HK Universal Combat Pistol (UCP), was ultimately cancelled in 2009 because it could not provide adequate ballistics in a handgun form.
