A hip-hop collective and a medieval manor share a name
In short: One is a multi-platinum American music group that redefined the 'boy band' label. The other is a traditionally farmed estate in Herefordshire home to the National Trust's largest orchard. Despite sharing a name, their origins span from internet forums to medieval history.
The American hip-hop group Brockhampton was founded in 2014 in San Marcos, Texas, by Kevin Abstract (born Ian Simpson). The collective emerged from the decentralized 'AliveSinceForever' internet music group, which originally had about 40 members. Abstract sought to create a more coordinated entity, inviting select members to relocate to Texas to form a diverse roster of rappers, singers, producers, and photographers.
The group gained massive commercial momentum in 2017 after relocating to Los Angeles. They released a trilogy of studio albums—Saturation, Saturation II, and Saturation III—in quick succession over just six months. These projects were notable for being entirely self-made, with recording, mixing, and mastering occurring almost exclusively in the band's shared home. By 2018, they signed a record deal with RCA Records estimated to be worth more than $15 million over three years.
The group's trajectory was marked by significant internal shifts, including the 2018 removal of founding member Ameer Vann following allegations of sexual and domestic abuse. Despite these challenges, the group achieved major milestones, including a Billboard 200 debut for 'Iridescence' and a Brit Award nomination. The group ceased operations in 2022 after launching their concluding studio projects, TM and The Family.
In a completely different context, Brockhampton is also a medieval manor house and traditionally farmed estate in Herefordshire, England. Managed by the National Trust, this historic site features the largest orchard cared for by the organization. While the music group was born on a street in Corpus Christi, the English estate offers a different kind of 'culture' through nature trails, woodland exploration, and family-friendly activities.
