From classical ballet soloist to drag queen icon and television judge
In short: Before she was a household name in drag, Brooke Lynn Hytes was a trained ballet dancer. From performing principal male roles in South Africa to competing on pointe in New York, her journey from the classical stage to the RuPaul's Drag Race finale is a masterclass in artistic evolution.
Born Brock Edward Hayhoe in Toronto on March 10, 1986, the performer's career began in the rigorous world of classical dance. After training for five years at the National Ballet School of Canada, Hayhoe moved to South Africa in 2006 at age 20. There, he joined the Cape Town City Ballet, eventually rising to the rank of soloist in 2007. In this capacity, he performed major classical roles such as the Nutcracker Prince, Solor in La Bayadère, and Albrecht in Giselle.
Seeking to perform ballet en pointe, Hayhoe relocated to New York City during 2008 to join Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. Performing under names like Vanya Verikosa, he toured internationally for four years before returning to Toronto to pursue drag full-time. After winning the prestigious Miss Continental title in 2014, she achieved global fame on the eleventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race, finishing as a runner-up to Yvie Oddly.
Hytes' success on the franchise was unprecedented; she achieved a record-breaking nine top-3 placements in a single season, a feat not surpassed until Jane Don't in 2026. This achievement marked a landmark moment: she was the inaugural Drag Race participant to serve as a permanent judge, joining Canada's Drag Race in 2020. By 2024, she stood alone as the sole judge present for all four seasons of the Canadian version, plus Canada vs. the World. the World series.
