How a sharp-tongued queen conquered RuPaul's Drag Race without a single slip-up
In short: Before becoming a global comedy star, Bianca Del Rio achieved something unprecedented on RuPaul's Drag Race. The American comedian and costume designer navigated the entire sixth season without ever placing low or having to perform a high-stakes lip sync for her life, eventually securing a historic victory.
Born Roy R. Haylock in 1975, the performer is of Cuban and Honduran descent. Before finding fame on reality television, Haylock established a career in the performing arts as a costume designer. By age 17, he had already won a Big Easy Entertainment Award for his work on the production Snow Queen, marking the start of a career that would eventually include thirteen award nominations for costume design. Raised in Louisiana, the artist grew up within a Catholic household. He initially moved to New York City to work at Bloomingdale's before returning to his home state.
Haylock's rise to mainstream recognition peaked in 2014. During his appearance on season six of RuPaul's Drag Race, he achieved a unique feat by avoiding any low or bottom placements throughout the entire show. This flawless run led to him being crowned the winner on May 19, 2014, defeating finalists Adore Delano and Courtney Act. By winning, Haylock also became the inaugural contestant of Hispanic heritage to claim victory in the American version of the series. This victory made him the second winner in the franchise to reach the finale without ever lip syncing for her life.
Since that win, the comedian has transitioned from the drag stage to international venues and film. In 2019, Haylock became the first drag queen to headline at Wembley Arena with the stand-up show It's Jester Joke. His career has since expanded into acting, including starring in the 2016 film Hurricane Bianca, and hosting international tours such as Werq the World. In 2026, Haylock was announced as a contestant for the sixth season of The Traitors. Beyond comedy, Haylock has appeared in various theatre productions, including the musical Rent. He also played the role of Hugo Battersby in the West End production of Everybody's Talking About Jamie.
