From prom dress model to Sports Illustrated cover star
In short: Before she was a household name in television and film, Brooklyn Decker was discovered in a North Carolina shopping mall. Her journey from the face of a prom dress maker to the cover of the 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is a classic tale of rapid ascent.
Brooklyn Decker's path to fame began far from the bright lights of New York City. Born in 1987 in Kettering, Ohio, she moved through various locations including Middletown, Ohio, and Matthews, North Carolina, before her career took flight. Her professional start was remarkably local; she was discovered as a teenager in a Charlotte shopping mall and initially worked as the model for Mauri Simone, a manufacturer of prom dresses. By 2003, her potential was recognized at the Connections Model and Talent Convention, where she won Model of the Year.
Her transition to international stardom was swift. Within just two months of moving to New York City in 2005, she auditioned for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. She became a recurring figure in the publication, appearing in 2006, 2007, and 2008, eventually reaching the pinnacle of the industry as the cover model for the 2010 issue, which was photographed in the Maldives. This period also saw her working for major brands like Victoria's Secret and appearing in prestigious editorials such as Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour.
Beyond the swimsuit industry, Decker successfully pivoted to acting and television. Her film credits include roles in the 2011 film Just Go with It, the 2012 film Battleship, and the ensemble comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting. In 2015, she secured a significant role as a series regular in the Netflix comedy Grace and Frankie, playing Mallory Hanson. While her modeling career was defined by high-profile campaigns and magazine covers, her later work has focused on television series and philanthropic efforts, including serving as a Global Ambassador for the Special Olympics.
