How BYU football transformed from a banned intramural sport into a national powerhouse
In short: After a 1900 football-related death led to a two-decade ban at all LDS Church schools, BYU football returned to the field in 1919. It eventually evolved into a national champion, a pioneer of the West Coast offense, and a financial outlier that thrived as an independent before joining the Big 12.
The trajectory of BYU football is marked by dramatic shifts. Following its 1919 revival, the program spent decades building its identity, eventually finding its stride under head coach LaVell Edwards. Promoted in 1972, Edwards implemented a sophisticated drop-back passing game that served as an early iteration of the West Coast offense. This strategic evolution propelled the Cougars to consistent success, culminating in an undefeated 12–0–0 season in 1984, when they were recognized as national champions. During this era, the program earned the nickname 'Quarterback U' for producing elite talent like Steve Young and Jim McMahon.
The program's financial model became a subject of intense interest during its stint as an FBS Independent from 2011 to 2022. By leveraging an 8-year contract with ESPN and maintaining control over its own broadcasting rights, BYU generated an estimated $67 million in annual revenue by 2018. This figure surpassed every Group of Five school and allowed the program to remain profitable—a rarity in college athletics. This independence was largely a response to the shifting landscape of conference television coverage and the departure of rival Utah to the Pac-12.
BYU officially joined the Big 12 Conference on July 1, 2023. The transition brought immediate challenges, with the team finishing 5–7 in its inaugural season. However, the program quickly adapted, achieving an 11–2 record in 2024 and reaching its first Big 12 Championship Game in 2025. Despite the pressures of conference realignment and the loss of key coaching staff to programs like Michigan, the Cougars have maintained a competitive edge, finishing the 2025 season with a 12–2 record after a victory in the Pop Tarts Bowl.
