How a presidential change of heart revived Oregon football in 1893
In short: Before the orange and black dominated the Pacific Northwest, athletics at Oregon Agricultural College were strictly banned. It took the death of one president and the arrival of his successor to bring football to Corvallis, sparking a century of fierce rivalries and legendary undefeated seasons.
The origins of Oregon State football are rooted in a sudden administrative shift. Prior to May 1892, athletics were prohibited at the college, then known as Oregon Agricultural College. However, following the death of President Benjamin Arnold, his successor, John Bloss, reversed the ban. This opened the door for the first organized team, led by Bloss’s son, William, who served as both the team's first coach and quarterback.
The program's early years were defined by overwhelming dominance and burgeoning regional prestige. On November 11, 1893, the team secured a 64–0 victory against Albany College at College Field. By 1897, the 'Aggies' achieved a perfect 5–0 record, claiming a league championship in the Oregon Intercollegiate Football Association. A similar feat occurred in 1907 under head coach Fred Norcross, where the team went 6–0, outscoring opponents 137–0 and claiming the title of 'Champions of the Pacific Coast' after defeating St. Vincent's College.
As the program evolved, so did its landscape of competition. The university established a long-standing rivalry with the University of Oregon, known traditionally as the 'Civil War,' with the first matchup occurring in 1894. While the team has moved through various conferences, including the Pacific-8 and the Pac-12, its identity remains tied to its history of excellence, including the 1962 Heisman Trophy win by Terry Baker and a legacy of 53 first-team All-Americans through 2023.
