In short: Bursaspor's trajectory is one of the most dramatic in Turkish football history. After shattering the dominance of Istanbul's elite to become national champions in 2010, the club suffered a meteoric collapse, falling through the divisions to the fourth tier in a remarkably short span of time.

Founded on June 1, 1963, Bursaspor was born from a merger of five local amateur clubs in the İzmit–Bursa region. This union is immortalized on the club's badge by five stars of different colors, representing the distinct identities of the founding entities. The club adopted green and white as its primary colors to symbolize hope and purity, while its nickname, "The Green Crocodiles," inspired the unique crocodile-shaped design of its home ground, the Centennial Atatürk Stadium.

The club's zenith arrived during the 2009–10 Süper Lig season. Under head coach Ertuğrul Sağlam, the team combined intense pressing with rapid transitions to secure the championship with 75 points, beating runner-up Fenerbahçe by a single point. This victory was historic as it ended more than 25 years of dominance by the "Big Three" teams of Istanbul, making Bursaspor the first club outside the capital to win the title since 1983–84. This success granted them a landmark spot in the 2010–11 UEFA Champions League group stage.

However, the following decade was defined by rapid decline. Despite reaching the Turkish Cup final in both 2012 and 2015, mismanagement and financial instability led to a series of relegations. By April 7, 2024, a home defeat confirmed their drop to the TFF Third League—the fourth tier of the Turkish system. This move from the top flight to the fourth division in just 14 years represents one of the steepest declines in the country's football history. The club has since begun a recovery, securing promotion back to the second tier for the 2026–27 season.
