From soap opera screen tests to a global feminine collective
In short: Candice Patton didn't just land a role in a superhero franchise; she used her platform to build a global movement. By leveraging her success in the Arrowverse, she co-founded a collective dedicated to empowering women and fighting for their rights on a global scale.
Candice Patton's path to stardom began with a nationwide competition. In May 2004, after her first year at Southern Methodist University, she won the CBS Soap Star Screen Test. This victory launched her career in the soap opera genre, leading to roles in The Bold and the Beautiful. By 2008, she was expanding her portfolio with a starring role in the web series Sorority Forever and a part in the independent film Commander and Chief.
Her career reached a new peak when she joined The CW's The Flash in 2014 as Iris West. This role became a cornerstone of the 'Arrowverse' shared universe, allowing her to appear in multiple series including Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. Her performance was critically recognized in 2017, when she won a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress on Television. However, Patton's work extended beyond the screen; she also took on diverse roles, such as playing a gangster's daughter in a dream sequence for the show's third season.
In 2017, Patton transitioned from actress to activist by co-founding Shethority (She + Authority). This global collective, which includes several of her Arrowverse co-stars, serves as a digital space for women to discuss self-acceptance, workplace harassment, and homophobia. The initiative operates a clothing line where all proceeds support organizations like Girls Not Brides and Girls, Inc. Additionally, she has engaged in high-profile public service, such as touring Kuwaiti military bases in 2019 to celebrate DC Comics' 80th anniversary of Batman.
