How a character designed to be disliked became a television icon
In short: When Shonda Rhimes created Callie Torres, she wasn't looking for a hero. Originally intended as a romantic foil for George O'Malley, the orthopedic surgeon was designed to be somewhat disliked by her colleagues. Yet, through complex storylines and groundbreaking representation, she evolved into one of the most enduring figures in television history.
The character of Callie Torres, portrayed by Sara Ramirez, began in Season 2 of Grey's Anatomy as a senior orthopedic resident. Initially, the character's purpose was narrow: to serve as a love interest for intern George O'Malley. In those early stages, even the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, admitted she had no idea what the character would eventually become, stating she was simply looking for a girlfriend for O'Malley.
As the series progressed, Torres's identity expanded through significant, often tumultuous, relationships. Her journey included a marriage to O'Malley, a one-night stand with plastic surgeon Mark Sloan, and a relationship with cardiothorcal surgeon Erica Hahn. To achieve authentic realism, the production team worked alongside the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), ensuring the lesbian/bisexual bond was depicted accurately without relying on tropes.
Despite early criticism—such as Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune noting a lack of depth beneath her 'brusque persona'—Torres's popularity grew. She became a cornerstone of the show's LGBTQ+ representation, appearing in 11 seasons and 239 episodes. Her character arc moved from a recurring role in Season 2 to star billing in Season 3, eventually navigating profound personal traumas, including a life-threatening car accident and the complexities of co-parenting with her wife, Arizona Robbins.
By the time Ramirez departed the series at the end of Season 12 to pursue other opportunities, Torres had left an indelible mark on pop culture. She was ranked as the #6 top lesbian or bisexual character by AfterEllen.com and earned several award nominations, including an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress.
