In short: The Canadian Armed Forces are a unified, volunteer-led entity distinct from the civilian Department of National Defence. While historically rooted in colonial militias and British command, today's forces operate as a modern NATO-aligned military, balancing global peacekeeping traditions with domestic emergency response and a renewed focus on strategic modernization.

The Canadian Armed Forces trace their origins to pre-Confederation colonial militias that defended British North America against American forces during the War of 1812 and the American Revolutionary War. For decades, military command remained under the British Crown, with British units stationed in Halifax until 1906. It was not until Canada gained legislative independence in 1931 that a distinctly Canadian military structure began to solidify, eventually leading to the unified command established in 1968.

Today, the military is a professional volunteer force of approximately 100,000 personnel. This includes 68,000 active members, 32,000 reservists, and 5,000 Canadian Rangers. The organization is governed by the National Defence Act and led by the chief of the Defence Staff, who operates under the direction of the minister of national defence. While the Governor General serves as commander-in-chief, the practical authority for deployments has shifted from the Crown to the cabinet and prime minister since 1992.

Modernization efforts, such as the 2008 'Canada First Defence Strategy', have aimed to update equipment, including the acquisition of C-17 Globemaster III aircraft and CH-47 Chinook helicopters. These efforts also address recruitment challenges and cultural shifts. Notably, the military has fully integrated women into all occupations, including combat roles and submarine service, since the year 2000. However, the institution faces ongoing scrutiny regarding sexual misconduct, with recent probes by former justice Louise Arbour highlighting the need for significant cultural reform.

The role of the Canadian military has evolved from a focus on 20th-century peacekeeping to active participation in NATO-sanctioned operations. Domestically, the forces serve as a critical resource for natural disasters, such as the 1998 ice storm, which saw the largest deployment of troops on Canadian soil since the Korean War. With a 2026–2027 budget of approximately US$63 billion, Canada has reached the 2.0% of GDP defence spending threshold for the first time in decades.
