A Rhode Island stadium survived toxic soil and funding crises to become a landmark
In short: Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket faced a turbulent path to completion, including industrial waste contamination and multiple construction halts. Despite these hurdles, the 10,500-seat venue emerged as a versatile hub for soccer, rugby, and college football, proving that persistence can transform a challenging riverfront development into a thriving community asset.
The project, originally envisioned as part of the $400 million Tidewater Landing development, was first announced in December 2019. Early plans estimated a $80 million cost for a 7,500-seat stadium. However, the site presented significant environmental challenges; industrial waste left toxic materials in the soil, requiring extensive remediation before construction could proceed. By October 2022, the site was cleared, and Dimeo Construction was appointed as the primary contractor.
Funding proved to be the most persistent obstacle. As costs ballooned—at one point jumping from a projected $59 million to $126 million—the state government faced intense debate over the use of public money. A narrow 6–5 vote eventually redirected $36 million originally intended for residential development toward the stadium. Further complications arose from inflation and the lingering economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to multiple work stoppages. By early 2024, funding was finally secured through bonds totaling approximately $54 million, to be repaid over thirty years.
The stadium officially opened on May 3, 2025, with a final construction cost of $132 million. Since its debut, the venue has hosted a diverse array of events beyond Rhode Island FC matches, including the 2025 Major League Rugby Championship and Women's Elite Rugby matches. It has also become a temporary home for college football rivalries and is slated to host Boston Legacy FC matches in 2026. Looking ahead, the stadium is set to welcome a new United Football League team in 2027, cementing its role as a central pillar of Rhode Island's sporting landscape.
