How a harbor seal and an anchor built a soccer dynasty
In short: Rhode Island FC didn't just appear; it was forged through construction delays, pandemic hurdles, and a $400-million development vision. From a nomadic first season to a record-breaking 2024 campaign, the club turned local defiance into a professional powerhouse with a mascot that embodies state pride.
Founded in 2019, Rhode Island FC was envisioned as the centerpiece of Tidewater Landing, a $400-million project in Pawtucket. The plan included a soccer-specific stadium seating 10,000 fans, integrated with apartments and hotels. However, inflation, COVID-19 supply-chain issues, and rising costs delayed construction until Governor Dan McKee cast the deciding vote for state funding on 25 July 2022.
Because construction stalled, the club played its inaugural 2024 season at Bryant University's Beirne Stadium. Despite this, the team secured season ticket deposits from all 39 of Rhode Island's cities and towns within months of their announcement. They made history on 16 March 2024, becoming the first USL Championship team to earn a point in their debut—a 1-1 draw against New Mexico United.
The club's identity features an anchor, a state symbol since 1647, and a mascot, Chip, an anthropomorphic harbor seal with thirteen whiskers representing Rhode Island as the thirteenth state. By 2025, the club moved into its 10,500-capacity Centreville Bank Stadium, having set the single-season USL record for most draws (15) in 2024.
