From Undrafted Safety to the Voice of Madden: The Career of Charles Davis
In short: Charles Davis never played a down in the NFL, yet he has become one of the most recognizable voices in football. After a standout collegiate career at Tennessee, he transitioned from the gridiron to the broadcast booth, eventually becoming the lead analyst for the iconic Madden NFL video game series.
Born in 1964, Charles Franklin Davis was a versatile athlete who excelled in football, basketball, and baseball at New Paltz High School. His prowess as a dual-threat quarterback and defensive back earned him a scholarship to the University of Tennessee. During his time as a Volunteer from 1982 to 1986, Davis transitioned to free safety, where he became a defensive anchor. By his senior year, he had registered 83 tackles and four interceptions, earning a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Despite his collegiate success, he went undrafted in 1987, briefly signing with the Dallas Cowboys before being waived that August.
Following his playing days, Davis pursued a diverse career in sports administration and media. He held roles at the United States Olympic Training Center and Stanford University before making history in October 1998 as the first African-American tournament director for a PGA Tour event, the Walt Disney World Golf Classic. His broadcasting career began in earnest in 1997 with Fox Sports South, eventually leading to high-profile roles across networks including ESPN, CBS, and the NFL Network. His analytical depth, honed by a master's degree in history, made him a fixture in college football and NFL coverage.
Davis is perhaps best known to modern fans as the voice of the Madden NFL franchise. Alongside Brandon Gaudin, he began providing commentary for the series in 2017, starting with Madden NFL 17. His broadcasting journey has seen him call major events like the BCS National Championship and Super Bowl XLVIII. As of his recent career trajectory, Davis has served as a lead analyst for CBS, where he was tapped to become the network's primary college football analyst following the 2025 season. His path illustrates a rare transition from the field to the booth, cementing his legacy as a prominent figure in sports media.
