How a mentor helped Ray Davis overcome foster care to reach the NFL
In short: Born in San Francisco to incarcerated parents, Ray Davis faced a childhood in foster care. Seeking stability, he sought a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. That decision helped transform his life, eventually leading him from high school standout to an All-Pro kick returner for the Buffalo Bills.
Ray Davis's journey to professional football is defined by resilience and a pivotal moment of seeking guidance. After experiencing the instability of foster care as a child, Davis reached out to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America program to find a positive role model. He was matched with Patrick Dowley, a mentor who Davis credits with turning his life around. This support proved vital as Davis navigated a complex academic and athletic path, including a post-graduate year at Blair Academy to address poor grades before his collegiate career began.
His collegiate trajectory was marked by frequent transitions and significant production. After starting at Temple in 2019, where he was named a first-team Freshman All-American by Pro Football Focus, Davis moved through the NCAA transfer portal to Vanderbilt and eventually Kentucky. During his final year of eligibility in 2023 with the Kentucky Wildcats, he demonstrated explosive capability, including a 280-yard, four-touchdown performance against the 22nd-ranked Florida Gators.
In the NFL, Davis has transitioned from a fourth-round pick in the 2024 draft to a multifaceted weapon for the Buffalo Bills. While initially serving as a secondary back, he evolved into a primary kick returner by 2025, earning first-team All-Pro honors in that role. His versatility is notable; beyond his rushing and receiving, he even auditioned as a backup kicker during a preseason game against the New York Giants, successfully converting an extra point attempt.
