From parental loans to chart-topping dominance: the evolution of Charli XCX
In short: Charli XCX’s journey began in 2007 with a loan from her parents to record a debut that saw only limited circulation. Since then, she has transitioned from experimental electronic mixtapes to becoming a global force, reaching number one in multiple countries with her most successful work to date.
The artist's discography is characterized by a shift from traditional pop structures toward experimental electronic sounds. In 2016, her Vroom Vroom EP signaled this move into experimental territory, a direction further explored through critically acclaimed mixtapes like Number 1 Angel and Pop 2 in 2017. This stylistic evolution continued through the 2020 album How I'm Feeling Now, which was recorded in just six weeks during the COVID-19 lockdowns. This experimentation was evident in her early mixtapes, Heartbreaks and Earthquakes and Super Ultra. Her 2019 album Charli also marked a significant milestone, debuting at number 14 in the UK.
Commercial success has scaled significantly over her career. Her major-label debut, True Romance, peaked at number 85 on the UK Albums Chart in 2013. By 2022, her album Crash became her most commercially successful release up to that point, topping charts in the UK, Australia, and Ireland. Nevertheless, her 2024 record Brat exceeded these benchmarks, reaching number one across the UK, Australia, Croatia, Ireland, and New Zealand, while becoming her most triumphant release within a single month. Her 2014 single Boom Clap achieved massive international success, reaching number six on the UK Singles Chart. Additionally, her album Sucker performed well globally, entering the top 50 in several nations.
Her recent output shows a prolific streak, including the 2026 soundtrack album Wuthering Heights and her eighth studio album, Music, Fashion, Film, released in July 2026. Throughout this trajectory, she has maintained a diverse body of work consisting of eight studio albums, four mixtapes, and numerous singles, including high-profile collaborations like her feature on Icona Pop's number-one hit 'I Love It' in 2012. The soundtrack for Wuthering Heights featured the Welsh musician John Cale on the lead single.
