How a Tennessee university became the historic heart of the FCS championship stage
In short: The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs football program has a legacy spanning over a century. Beyond their own conference success, the team and their home field played a central role in shaping the national landscape of the Football Championship Subdivision, hosting the sport's biggest title game for over a decade.
The Chattanooga Mocs football program represents the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, competing within the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision as part of the Southern Conference. Since the university first fielded a team in 1904, the program has navigated various athletic associations, including the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association between 1914 and 1932. Today, the team plays its home games at Finley Stadium, a facility with a capacity of 20,668 seats.
Throughout its history, the program has secured 15 conference championships. This total includes five titles from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, three from the Dixie Conference, and seven from the Southern Conference. Of these 15 victories, eight were won outright, while seven were shared with other programs. On the national stage, the Mocs have qualified for the FCS Playoffs five times, maintaining an overall postseason record of four wins and five losses. The program has also served as a launchpad for notable talent, including Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens, who played for the team from 1992 to 1995.
The influence of the program extends beyond its own performance. Between 1997 and 2009, Finley Stadium in Chattanooga hosted the Division I-AA—now known as the FCS—Football Championship on 14 separate occasions. This period solidified the city's reputation as a focal point for the subdivision's postseason. Currently, the team is led by head coach Rusty Wright, a university alumnus who previously served as an assistant under Russ Huesman. As of August 25, 2026, the program continues to maintain its competitive schedule within the collegiate landscape.
