In short: The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is a massive infrastructure undertaking designed to modernize Pakistan. By building highways, railways, and power plants, the project seeks to transition Pakistan from an agricultural economy to an industrial one, while providing China with a vital shortcut for energy imports.

Launched as a key component of China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a bilateral project aimed at improving infrastructure and trade. The initiative, first announced by President Xi Jinping in 2013, draws inspiration from the ancient Silk Road. In Pakistan, the project focuses on constructing modern transportation networks, energy projects, and special economic zones to address electricity shortages and modernize the economy.

The scale of the investment is immense. CPEC project valuations grew from an initial $46 billion to $62 billion by 2020, with Chinese funding in Pakistan hitting $65 billion by 2022. One of the project's strategic goals is to secure a shorter route for China's energy imports from the Middle East. By leveraging Gwadar's deep-water Arabian Sea port, this corridor might shrink China's 12,000 km oil transit route to 2,395 km, potentially yielding $2 billion in yearly savings.

However, the project faces significant challenges and criticism. Some experts worry that the massive loans required for such projects create a heavy financial burden on developing nations, potentially leading to economic collapse. Pakistan, for instance, has struggled with external payments, with one-fourth of its total debt owed to China. While China reports that the BRI has helped lift over 40 million people out of poverty and created 400,000 jobs in host countries, critics point to issues of debt sustainability and unfinished projects.
