From Premier League champion to an unexpected football manager
In short: He was a cornerstone of Leicester City’s historic 5,000–1 underdog victory. Now, Christian Fuchs is navigating the high-stakes pressure of the EFL League Two, proving that the journey from a defensive stalwart to a tactical leader is rarely a straight line.
Christian Fuchs’ footballing identity is defined by resilience and unexpected triumphs. A left back by trade, he was a vital component of the Leicester City squad that achieved the miraculous 2015–16 Premier League title. During that era, his defensive impact was measurable; following a tactical shift by manager Claudio Ranieri in late 2015, Fuchs helped Leicester lead the league in clean sheets alongside Arsenal, personally recording 77 successful tackles and 98 interceptions during that period.
His career path saw him move through several European giants, including Schalke 04, where he competed in the UEFA Champions League, and VfL Bochum. On the international stage, Fuchs was a pillar for Austria, earning 7lar 78 caps between 2006 and 2016. He rose from a substitute debut against Croatia to becoming the permanent captain of his nation under manager Marcel Koller in 2012, leading them through their first-ever qualification for the UEFA Euro tournament.
Transitioning into management presented a new set of challenges. In November 2025, Fuchs was appointed manager of Newport County following the dismissal of David Hughes. Despite a difficult start that saw the club bottom of the table with only 11 points from 16 matches, Fuchs successfully steered the team to a 20th-place finish, securing their EFL status. However, his managerial tenure was marked by sudden shifts; after a period of struggle, he unexpectedly resigned in June 2026, citing a lack of further contribution to the club's mission.
