How a Houston DJ accidentally invented a hypnotic new genre of hip-hop
In short: In the late 1980s, DJ Screw wasn't trying to revolutionize music. While hanging out with friends, he discovered that dramatically reducing a record's pitch created a heavy, mellow sound perfect for storytelling. This accidental discovery birthed 'chopped and screwed,' a technique that transformed the tempo of Southern rap.
The 'screwed' technique involves slowing a song's tempo to between 60 and 70 beats per minute. To achieve the 'chopped' effect, DJs manipulate the audio by skipping beats, using record scratching, or employing stop-time to reconfigure segments of a phrase into a new order. While much of Southern hip-hop in the 1990s, such as Miami bass, was characterized by fast, upbeat rhythms, Houston's style remained consistently slower, a trend visible even in the mid-to-late 1980s with the Geto Boys.
The genre's rise is often linked to the use of 'lean' in Houston between 1991 and 1992, with some suggesting the drug's effect of slowing the brain contributed to the music's appeal. However, DJ Screw himself explicitly denied that one needed to be under the influence to enjoy his tapes, noting that his audience included children and parents alike. The movement eventually expanded from South Houston to the north side through figures like DJ Michael '5000' Watts and OG Ron C, later reaching global audiences via Napster in the late 1990s.
Today, the legacy of the genre persists through the Chopstars DJ collective and modern digital iterations like 'slowed + reverb.' This latter style, which gained massive popularity on YouTube and TikTok, has faced criticism from some Houston enthusiasts who view it as a 'gentrified' or poor imitation of the original culture. Despite these debates, the influence of the Houston sound continues to evolve, even merging with EDM to create subgenres like 'future screw' and 'lean house.'
