From a vampire gimmick to 27 championships: the enduring career of Christian Cage
In short: He once played a gothic vampire in a blood-soaked alliance, but the man known as Christian Cage has built a legacy far more complex. Spanning decades and multiple global promotions, his journey from Canadian independent circuits to wrestling royalty is a masterclass in reinvention.
Born William Jason Reso in 1973, the Canadian performer's career is defined by his ability to pivot between personas. He rose to prominence during the WWF's 'Attitude Era' as part of a legendary tag team with his best friend, Edge. Together, they were instrumental in reviving tag team wrestling, famously participating in the high-stakes 'Tables, Ladders, and Chairs' matches that became a hallmark of the era. Before reaching the global stage, he honed his craft in Canadian independent promotions, even competing in Japan. His early ring name was a nod to Hollywood, blending the names of Christian Slater and Nicolas Cage.
Reso's early career was marked by rapid success; he captured the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship in his very first match in 1998. Throughout his tenure in the WWE, he transitioned from a gothic character in the alliance known as The Brood to a comedic 'cool dude' persona. His versatility allowed him to secure various prestigious singles titles, including the Intercontinental, European, and Hardcore Championships. His championship run was remarkably efficient, as he secured the ECWA Heavyweight Championship in July 1998. Later, he formed the Un-Americans stable alongside Lance Storm, Test, and William Regal.
The scope of his achievements extends far beyond a single promotion. Between his time in WWE, TNA, and AEW, Reso has amassed a staggering 27 total championships. This tally includes seven world titles and ten tag team titles. Even after a period of retirement due to concussion issues in 2014, he successfully resumed his in-ring career in 2021, proving his longevity in a physically punishing industry. His recent resurgence includes winning the AEW TNT Championship twice. He also notably captured the Impact World Championship during a period of partnership between AEW and TNA.
