In short: Ian Hodgkinson arrived in Mexico City in 1991 with little wrestling training and a unique look. Promoters initially dismissed him as a joke, but his rock star aesthetic and dreadlocked blue hair captivated the audience. Within days, the Canadian outsider transformed into the iconic wrestling persona known as Vampiro.

Born in 1967, Ian Hodgkinson began his career as a jobber in Montreal before moving to Mexico City to join Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). When he met promoters Paco Alonso and Antonio Peña, they were skeptical of his appearance, which included multiple tattoos and long, dyed hair. They assigned him the name Vampiro Canadiense, playing on his stated interest in vampires. Despite a limited technical repertoire consisting primarily of basic strikes and headbutts, his charisma made him an instant favorite among young female fans in Mexico.

Vampiro’s rise was marked by intense rivalries and high-stakes matches. He participated in numerous hair-versus-hair bouts, defeating opponents like Bestia Negra II and Pirata Morgan in 1992. His career eventually spanned major promotions including World Championship Wrestling (WCW), where he formed notable alliances and feuds, and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA). His time in Mexico was also defined by a long-standing, real-life feud with fellow star Konnan, which began after a failed attempt to break into mainstream Mexican soap operas.

Beyond his wrestling persona, Hodgkinson’s career was marked by physical toll and diverse roles. He suffered a broken neck in 2000, which preceded the end of his tenure in WCW. Throughout his decades-long career, he held multiple championships, including the JCW Heavyweight Championship three times and the UWA World Heavyweight Championship. Today, he remains a multifaceted figure, having transitioned into roles such as color commentator for Lucha Underground and serving as a chapter head for the Guardian Angels citizen crime patrol in Mexico City.
