A former LAPD officer launched a deadly campaign to reclaim his reputation and name.
In short: After being fired for allegedly falsifying a report about a training officer, Christopher Dorner waged an asymmetric war against the LAPD. His manifesto demanded a public admission of retaliation, triggering a massive manhunt across California, Nevada, and Mexico that ended in a fatal standoff at a remote mountain cabin.
Christopher Dorner, a former LAPD officer and Navy Reserve lieutenant, was terminated in 2008 following an internal investigation into his claims that his training officer, Teresa Evans, used excessive force against a suspect. A review board concluded Dorner had lied, a finding upheld by the Los Angeles County Superior Court despite a judge noting uncertainty regarding the incident. Dorner, who maintained he was a scapegoat, spent years unsuccessfully appealing the decision, eventually declaring that his actions were intended to clear his name.
In February 2013, Dorner initiated a series of violent attacks against law enforcement personnel and their families, naming forty targets in an 11,000-word manifesto. His campaign began with the murders of Monica Quan—the daughter of his former attorney—and her fiancé, Keith Lawrence. As the manhunt intensified, thousands of officers were deployed, and protection details were established for numerous potential targets. The search spanned multiple counties and even extended into Mexico, with authorities eventually offering a $1 million reward for information leading to his capture.
The standoff concluded on February 12, 2013, near Big Bear Lake. After carjacking a vehicle, Dorner was tracked to a cabin by San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies. During the ensuing shootout, Detective Jeremiah MacKay was killed. Police eventually used a demolition vehicle to dismantle the cabin walls and deployed pyrotechnic tear gas canisters, which ignited the structure. A single gunshot was heard from within before the building was consumed by fire. Human remains and Dorner's identification were later recovered from the ruins, ending one of the most extensive manhunts in California history.
