The 1978 Cinema Rex fire: A tragedy that ignited the Iranian Revolution
In short: On August 19, 1978, four militants locked the doors of the Cinema Rex in Abadan, Iran, and set the building ablaze. The resulting inferno killed hundreds, fueling widespread anti-Shah fervor. While the regime and protesters traded blame, the disaster became a pivotal, bloody catalyst for the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
On the evening of August 19, 1978, at 20:21, four men—Hossein Takbalizadeh, Faraj Bazrkar, Fallah Mohammadi, and Yadollah Mohammadpur—doused the Cinema Rex in Abadan with petrol and barred the exits while hundreds watched the film The Deer. The fire claimed at least 377 lives, with some estimates reaching as high as 470. While approximately 100 people escaped via the roof and 223 survived with injuries, the vast majority of those inside perished in the conflagration.
In the immediate aftermath, the Iranian public and revolutionary groups blamed the Shah and his secret police, SAVAK, for the atrocity. This narrative proved highly effective for the Islamic opposition, as it transformed a struggle between the monarch and conservative mullahs into a national movement. Tens of thousands marched in the streets, chanting against the Shah. However, subsequent scholarship and later investigations have pointed to the culpability of radical Islamic militants who viewed cinemas as centers of Western decadence and vice.
Evidence emerging in later years suggested the arsonists were linked to Shia clerics, with some reports indicating the order originated from Najaf. Despite this, the newly formed Islamic Republic continued to officially blame SAVAK. The judicial process following the revolution was heavily criticized as a theatrical trial, overseen by a judge who also acted as the district attorney. While the tragedy remains a subject of intense historical debate and misinformation, its role in destabilizing the Pahlavi regime and accelerating the 1979 revolution is undisputed.
