How a New Jersey producer defined the hazy, atmospheric sound of cloud rap
In short: Michael Thomas Volpe, better known as Clams Casino, emerged from Nutley, New Jersey, to reshape modern hip-hop. By blending traditional percussion with ethereal, off-kilter melodies, he became a foundational architect of the cloud rap movement in the early 2010s, collaborating with iconic artists while maintaining a distinct, moody sonic signature.
Born in 1987, Volpe began his musical journey by experimenting with keyboards during his time at Nutley High School. His rise to prominence was marked by a series of influential mixtapes, starting with his 2011 debut EP Rainforest and the Instrumentals series, which he distributed for free via his website. These projects established a unique aesthetic characterized by an overdose of moving atmosphere, setting him apart in a crowded production landscape.
His influence spans a diverse roster of collaborators, including ASAP Rocky, Lil B, Mac Miller, and Vince Staples. Perhaps his most enduring work is the instrumental track I'm God, which originally appeared on Lil B's 2009 album 6 Kiss. The track gained significant traction over the years, eventually leading Volpe to officially clear the Imogen Heap sample in April 2020. It remains his most popular work, boasting over 25 million views on YouTube.
Beyond his contributions to hip-hop, Volpe has demonstrated versatility by scoring Locomotor, a 2014 work choreographed by his cousin Stephen Petronio. In 2016, he transitioned to a major label release with his debut studio album, 32 Levels, which narrowly entered the Billboard 200. His career continues to evolve, with recent collaborations including an August 2025 announcement regarding his feature on Italian producer Sick Luke's album Dopamina. Whether through his early free mixtapes or his studio albums, Volpe remains a pivotal figure in contemporary music production.
