In short: On November 22, 1963, Secret Service agent Clint Hill witnessed the unthinkable. In a split-second decision, he leaped onto a moving limousine to protect President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, a moment captured forever by the Zapruder film.

During the motorcade in Dallas, Texas, Hill was riding on the running board of the follow-up car. Upon hearing what sounded like a firecracker, he realized the President had been wounded. He grabbed a handrail and jumped toward the presidential limousine, a feat made difficult by the driver's sudden acceleration as the car sped toward Parkland Memorial Hospital.

Once on the vehicle, Hill found a scene of chaos. He encountered Mrs. Kennedy on the rear trunk and guided her back into her seat. He then positioned his body over the President and the First Lady to provide a human shield. During the frantic transit, Hill signaled the gravity of the situation to other agents with a 'thumbs-down' gesture and a shake of his head.

Hill’s career spanned five presidencies, serving from Dwight D. Eisenhower through Gerald Ford. He rose through the ranks to become the Special Agent in Charge of presidential protection under Lyndon B. Johnson and later served as the assistant director for all protection. He retired in 1975, having witnessed the highest levels of American political history.

Despite the trauma of the assassination, Hill remained a steadfast figure in the Secret Service. He was honored by Mrs. Kennedy herself shortly after the funeral and later became a prominent voice on the events, maintaining his belief that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone while reflecting on the narrow margins of the tragedy.
