From walk-on to NFL starter: The unconventional rise of cornerback Cobie Durant
In short: Cobie Durant went from receiving zero high school scholarship offers to becoming a standout NFL cornerback. After working at FedEx and playing at a prep academy, he transformed into an All-American at South Carolina State before being drafted by the Los Angeles Rams, eventually earning accolades as a premier defensive playmaker.
Born in Lamar, South Carolina, in 1998, Decobie Durant was a multi-sport athlete in high school who excelled as a quarterback and safety. Despite leading his team to a state championship, he was overlooked by recruiters. He spent a year at Palmetto Prep Academy and worked at FedEx before joining South Carolina State as a walk-on in 2018. By 2021, he had developed into a first-team Associated Press FCS All-American and the Defensive MVP of the Cricket Celebration Bowl, finishing his college career with 12 interceptions.
Durant’s professional journey began when the Los Angeles Rams selected him in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. His transition to the NFL was marked by rapid adaptation; as a rookie, he recorded three interceptions, including an 85-yard touchdown return against the Denver Broncos. His performance in 2024 earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after a standout game against the Las Vegas Raiders, where he forced a fumble and recorded an interception. By 2025, he was recognized as the Black College Football Pro Player of the Year.
Throughout his tenure with the Rams, Durant demonstrated versatility, moving from a backup role to a consistent starter. He played through various injuries, including hamstring and chest issues, while maintaining a high level of production. In the 2025 postseason, he proved instrumental in the Rams' run to the NFC Championship Game, recording multiple interceptions against the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears. Following four seasons in Los Angeles, Durant signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys in March 2026, marking a new chapter in his professional career.
Durant's path highlights the often non-linear progression of professional athletes who emerge from smaller programs. His ability to secure starting positions despite significant roster turnover and injury challenges within the Rams' secondary underscores his technical development. As he moves to Dallas, his career remains a testament to the impact of persistence for players who begin their journey outside the traditional collegiate spotlight.
