From coal mining training to the pinnacle of the UFC Bantamweight division
In short: Before he was a world champion, Cody Garbrandt worked as a bouncer and prepared for a career in the coal mines. His journey from an Ohio wrestling standout to a knockout specialist is a masterclass in resilience and the pursuit of a singular, violent passion.
Cody Garbrandt’s path to professional mixed martial arts was anything but linear. Raised in Uhrichsville, Ohio, by his mother Jessica, Garbrandt’s early athletic years were defined by wrestling and football. After winning a 2007 state wrestling title during his freshman year at Claymont High School, he achieved All-State status playing linebacker in his junior year. However, his heart was not in wrestling; he eventually pivoted to boxing, compiling an impressive 32–0 amateur record over approximately six years.
The transition to professional MMA required navigating significant personal and professional hurdles. After a stint at Newberry College and various jobs—including working as a bouncer and undergoing coal miner training—Garbrandt moved to Sacramento, California, to train at Team Alpha Male. His professional ascent was marked by rapid success, including a string of first-round finishes and a decisive unanimous decision victory over Dominick Cruz at UFC 207 on December 30, 2016, to claim the UFC Bantamweight Championship.
Garbrandt’s career has been characterized by both extreme physical dominance and significant adversity. He holds a share of the record for the most consecutive fights in UFC history involving a landed knockdown, totaling seven bouts. Yet, his momentum has been frequently interrupted by injuries, including a back injury that cost him a high-profile bout against T.J. Dillashaw, and the severe health complications of COVID-19, which included pneumonia and thrombosis. Despite these setbacks, his ability to secure 'Performance of the Night' honors continues to define his legacy in the octagon.
