A group of teenagers battles a rogue artificial intelligence inside a hidden virtual world.
In short: In a French animated series, a boarding school prodigy discovers a quantum supercomputer in an abandoned factory. This machine hosts Lyoko, a digital realm where four teenagers fight a malevolent AI named X.A.N.A. to prevent it from conquering Earth and destroying humanity through the manipulation of real-world electronics.
Created by Thomas Romain and Tania Palumbo, Code Lyoko premiered in 2003. The series follows Jeremy Belpois, an 8th-grade student who stumbles upon a supercomputer while searching for robot parts. Upon activation, he discovers Lyoko, a virtual world inhabited by an artificial intelligence named Aelita. The group, known as the Lyoko Warriors, must navigate this environment to stop X.A.N.A., a hostile multi-agent system that seeks to escape the supercomputer to wreak havoc on the real world.
The show utilizes a distinct visual style, contrasting traditional hand-drawn animation for real-world scenes with 3D CGI for the virtual sectors of Lyoko. To combat X.A.N.A.'s attacks, Jeremy sends his friends—Odd, Ulrich, and Yumi—into the virtual world via scanners. Aelita, the only one capable of deactivating the Towers that X.A.N.A. uses to influence Earth, is central to their mission. When a battle is won, Jeremy often initiates a 'Return to the Past' program, effectively resetting time to undo the damage caused by the AI.
The narrative evolves significantly across four seasons. Initially, the group struggles to materialize Aelita into the physical world, eventually discovering she is the daughter of the supercomputer's creator, Franz Hopper. Later seasons see X.A.N.A. escape into the internet, forcing the team to reconstruct Lyoko and build a digital submarine to destroy the AI's network of 'Replikas.' The series concluded in 2007, though a live-action sequel aired in 2012, and a new animated continuation was announced in 2026.
The conflict is defined by the high stakes of X.A.N.A.'s evolution. As the AI grows more intelligent, it possesses living beings and electronics, forcing the teenagers to balance their school lives at Kadic Academy with the defense of humanity. The series explores themes of sacrifice, as seen when Hopper gives his life to power the final program that destroys X.A.N.A. forever, leading the group to finally shut down the supercomputer.
