In short: In the year 2808, the city of Oedo revived a feudal practice to combat rampant cybercrime. Convicted offenders are enlisted as law enforcement, armed with weapons and explosive collars. This unique premise defined a cult classic that remains a cornerstone of the cyberpunk genre.

Cyber City Oedo 808 is a multi-media cyberpunk trilogy released between 1990 and 1991. Yoshiaki Kawajiri oversaw a three-part original video animation (OVA), alongside a three-volume novel by Akinori Endô and a PC Engine video game. The narrative centers on three heavily convicted prisoners—Sengoku, Gogul, and Benten—who are granted reduced sentences in exchange for serving in the Cyber Police (CP).

The mechanism of this law enforcement is rooted in the historical Japanese practice of hōmen, which involved employing criminals to apprehend others. In the futuristic Oedo, these convicts work under Commanding Officer Juzo Hasegawa. To ensure compliance, each prisoner is equipped with a jitte and a remote-detonatable explosive collar. The stakes are literal: any act of insubordination or mission failure results in the immediate detonation of the collar.

The series has achieved significant critical acclaim for its "gripping storytelling" and "striking visuals." While some critics note a limited amount of character development due to the trilogy's short runtime, others praise its "legendary battle ballet" and "melancholy ending." Interestingly, the international experience of the work varied; the 1994 British and Australian VHS release featured a distinct, rock-centric 23-track score by Rory McFarlane, which differed significantly from the more pop-like original Japanese score.

Beyond the anime, the franchise expanded into unique media, including the 1991 graphic adventure game "Attribute of the Beast." Unlike the other entries, this game features a completely original storyline rather than an adaptation of the OVA episodes. Today, the series is remembered as a pivotal work that elevated the cyberpunk genre through its "tantalizing premise" and "exceptionally well-written characters."
