In short: Consuelo Yznaga arrived in London with a massive dowry and a penchant for the banjo. As a prominent member of the 'Buccaneers,' this Cuban-American socialite navigated the highest circles of British royalty, even entertaining Tsar Nicholas II, while her husband’s gambling habits threatened to dissolve her vast fortune.

Born in New York City in 1853 to a Cuban noble family and a Louisiana plantation owner, Consuelo Yznaga was a celebrated beauty and a key figure in the high-society 'Buccaneers.' Her marriage to George Montagu, Viscount Mandeville, in 1876 was a massive social event; the 1,200 guest carriages famously caused a traffic jam along Broadway in Manhattan.

The union brought immense wealth to the Montagu family, but it was accompanied by significant friction. Consuelo provided a dowry worth $6 million in 2018 rates, yet her husband's notorious lifestyle—characterized by gambling and mistresses—quickly depleted much of her fortune. The situation became so dire that the 7th Duke of Manchester banished the couple to Tandragee Castle in County Armagh until 1883.

Despite these domestic struggles, Consuelo remained an influential figure within the 'Marlborough House set,' the intimate circle of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). By leveraging her high social standing, she facilitated Anglo-American matrimonial unions for subsequent generations. Her legacy survives through exquisite jewelry, such as the Cartier-made Manchester Tiara, which is now held by the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Consuelo died in Mayfair on 20 November 1909, from neuritis. At the time of her death, her estate was valued at approximately $69 million in 2017 rates. She was a woman of diverse interests, engaging in charitable work focused on health, education, and poverty, even entertaining King Edward VII and Tsar Nicholas II shortly before her passing.
