From Colonial Outpost to Modern Hub: The Enduring Legacy of Conway, South Carolina
In short: Founded in 1732, this historic riverside city has evolved from a royal township into a vibrant center of education and commerce. While its roots are deeply embedded in the American Revolutionary era, today it serves as a crucial hub within the Myrtle Beach metropolitan region, balancing heritage with modern growth.
Established as part of a colonial land development initiative by Royal Governor Robert Johnson, the settlement was originally christened Kingston. Its strategic location on a bluff overlooking the Waccamaw River made it a significant point of interest during the 18th century. For decades, the town maintained a strong connection to the British Crown, with the birthday of King George II serving as a major local celebration. However, this loyalty shifted dramatically as tensions rose under his successor, King George III.
During the Revolutionary War, the area became a complex landscape of divided allegiances. While many residents supported the cause of independence, the region also harbored a notable population of Tories. The vicinity saw military activity, including skirmishes at Black Lake and Bear Bluff, and served as a base for the legendary Francis Marion, known as the Swamp Fox. Following the conflict, the town underwent a series of name changes, eventually becoming Conway in 1883 to honor General Robert Conway.
In the modern era, Conway has transformed into a significant educational and administrative center. As the seat of Horry County, it hosts Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College, which anchor its intellectual life. The downtown area, revitalized through the Main Street USA project, now features a scenic Riverwalk along the Waccamaw. With a population that grew from 17,103 in 2010 to 24,849 by 2020, the city continues to expand while preserving its historic character, including structures designed by Washington Monument architect Robert Mills.
